In March 2021, Educational Testing Service (ETS) announced that the TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language) would be shortened by one hour starting from August 1, 2021. The exam, which measures English language proficiency for non-native speakers, is a requirement for admission to many colleges and universities in English-speaking countries.

The TOEFL iBT previously had a duration of 3 hours and 30 minutes, including a 10-minute break. However, the new format reduces the total testing time to 2 hours and 45 minutes, with the break reduced to five minutes.

The new format will consist of the following sections:

Reading: 45-72 minutes (previously 60-80 minutes)
Listening: 41-57 minutes (previously 60-90 minutes)
Speaking: 17 minutes (previously 20 minutes)
Writing: 50 minutes (previously 50 minutes)
This change has been made in response to feedback from test-takers and test centers regarding the length of the exam. Shortening the test may reduce the physical and mental strain on test-takers, allowing them to perform better.

The Reading and Listening sections will now have fewer questions, and the Speaking section will require fewer responses. The Writing section remains unchanged.

It’s important to note that the scoring system for the TOEFL iBT remains the same. Scores range from 0-120, with each section scored out of 30. The shorter duration of the exam will not affect the scoring system in any way.

Students preparing for the TOEFL iBT should be aware of the changes to the exam and adjust their preparation accordingly. While the reduced testing time may be less taxing on test-takers, it’s still important to practice time management and familiarize yourself with the exam format and content.
