UK Family Visa Application Fee Increases

The recent announcement by the UK government to increase visa application fees has drawn widespread criticism, particularly for the significant hike in family visa costs. This increase, which took effect on October 4, 2023, has raised concerns about its impact on family unity and the ability of families to reunite in the UK.

The fee increase for family visas is particularly steep, with a 20% rise in the standard application fee, now standing at £1,846. This is in addition to the Immigration Health Surcharge, which is set to increase by 66% to £1,035 per year in January 2024. The combined cost of these fees will place a significant financial burden on families seeking to bring their loved ones to the UK.

The government has justified this fee increase by stating that it is necessary to cover the cost of processing visa applications and to deter frivolous applications. However, critics argue that the increase is disproportionate and will disproportionately affect low-income families, preventing them from exercising their right to family unity.

The impact of these fee increases is already being felt by families across the globe. Some families have been forced to postpone or cancel their plans to reunite due to the financial constraints imposed by the increased fees. Others are struggling to raise the necessary funds, leaving them in a state of uncertainty about their future.

The consequences of these fee increases extend beyond the financial burden. The emotional toll on families separated by immigration is immense. Children are deprived of the opportunity to grow up with their extended family, and parents are forced to endure the pain of being apart from their loved ones.

The UK government’s decision to increase visa application fees, particularly for family visas,  places undue financial hardship on families, impedes family unity, and inflicts emotional distress on those affected.
